This principal is in use in the UK in some outlying areas that cannot obtain broadband, and is probably more appropriate in Spain where a larger proportion of the population live in the countryside (campo) and there are no wi-fi networks.
With a two way system - both receiving and transmitting data via a satellite - you can utilise a variety of internet broadband speeds (starting at 512k/128k) depending on the particular package that you choose, with performance equal to or better than Telefonica.
There is an initial outlay for the satellite dish, associated vsat hardware and professional installation. It must be installed by a professional installer as you are not only receiving signals, but transmitting data to a satellite - aiming of the dish is critical. Don't confuse it with the accuracy of SKY tv dishes!
The cost for the hardware and installation is 1,950 euros from our supplier. This price includes IVA tax (there may be an additional cost towards travelling expenses, depending on your location in Spain). This is for a single IP address. If you require up to 5 IP addresses then add 275 euros.
Monthly ISP fees depend on the package selected, and start with a 512k/128k service which is suitable for the majority of customers. The basic package is only 90 euros/month (and that INCLUDES IVA tax!!!)
Is this a large price to pay for internet and phone? Well you can't hide the fact that its higher than you would pay for a normal broadband modem and subscription in the UK, but Vsat hardware is much more complex than a simple modem. And when you consider wireless installation can often be in the 450 - 500 (+ tax) bracket and isp fees 39 euros + tax, its not so outrageous.
The above prices for 2-way satellite are for a new design of hardware which is 1000 euros cheaper than the previous 'mass market' hardware, and has a smaller dish size of only 75cm.
If you need the internet in Spain there are very few other cost effective alternatives for rural locations in Spain.
Note: You may also see 'satellite' systems advertised for half the price, both in hardware costs and monthly subscription fees. Please read the small print on such systems before proceeding!
